Lessons and Laboratories

The purpose of the laboratory activities is to develop skills and provide good know-how on the treatment and analysis of archaeological materials and data.

The workshops will be mainly conducted at the Celano Paludi Museum, an archaeological museum in Celano, in the province of L’Aquila (Abruzzo). The museum was built a few years after the discovery of a bronze age village built on the shores of Lake Fucino.

The Restoration Laboratory (LR) inside the Museum is one of the offices of the Superintendence of Archaeology of Abruzzo.  This setting offers students the opportunity to assist and participate in the management, cleaning, consolidation, restoration and labeling of archaeological artifacts, as well as the opportunity to gain experience in the drawing, inventory and cataloging of these artefacts.

Within the LR, XRF (X-Ray Fluorescence) analysis will be performed, with the collaboration of the CNR of Pisa. Techniques including photogrammetry and drones will be incorporated into the laboratory during the theoretical part of the programme and later used on site to enable practical applications of the developed theories.

The lessons will be held by professors, researchers and professionals from different Italian universities (University of Pisa, University of Foggia, University of L’Aquila, University of Rome) and various research organizations (CNR-Pisa, INGV-Rome, Coop.Limes – Avezzano).

The aim of the lessons is to improve knowledge on archeology with particular attention to the time span between the prehistoric period and the Roman Empire.
