Alba Fucens

Alba Fucens is an ancient Latin colony, located in the current district of Massa d’Albe (AQ). The city was founded by the Romans in 303 BC, in the territory of the Equi people, in the north of Lake Fucino, in a fascinating environmental and geological context.

The excavation campaigns conducted by a team of Belgian scholars in 1949, and by experts at the Archaeological Heritage of Abruzzo since 2006 have surfaced part of the town, which is surrounded by a polygonal worked-stone wall, at the center of which the public and private buildings are located.

On the slopes of the hill of San Pietro, on which stood the temple of Apollo, there is an amphitheater, which was built at the beginning of the 1st century AD.

The monumental center of the colony consists of the main road axes, via del Miliario, via dei Pilastri and via dell’Elefante, delimiting the central area, which was used for the public buildings -from north to south: forum, basilica, macellum, thermal baths and sanctuary of Hercules.

On the sides of the roads there are the tabernae and some houses similar to those that occupied the slopes of the hills.

The excavation activities supported by workshop activities will allow students to acquire skills and knowledge related to the different types of archaeological artefacts as well as develop an understanding of how to draft the related documents.
